History of the MOS by 1991

 

  • 4.12.1932 – constituent general meeting of the Ornithological Society with its seat in Přerov with 21 participants. The first chairman, František Ginter, was elected. 

  • 16. 8. 1933 – The society had 172 members, decision about establishment of an ornithological museum, ornithological library and own journal. 

  • 14. 12. 1933 – The society changed its name: Moravian Ornithological Society with its seat in Přerov. 

  • 14. 1. 1934 – the first issue of the journal Moravský ornitolog ("The Moravian Ornithologist"). 

  • 2. 6. 1934 – The journal was renamed: Československý ornitolog (“The Czechoslovakian Ornithologist”), own rings “MOS-Přerov-ČSR”. 

  • 20. 6. - 15. 8.1936 – MOS had a successful exposition at the Middle-Moravian Exhibition. 

  • 10. 6.1937 – erection of a building of the Ornitological Station was started. 

  • 26. 3. 1938 – The building was completed. 

  • 28. 10. 1938 – A planned opening ceremony could not be realised due to tragic events which were a sign of future world war. 

  • 1939 – the journal had to be renamed (order by invader authorities): Ornitolog (“Ornithologist”). Ringing of birds was forbidden. 

  • 14. 4.1943 – the last instalment of the loan for the erection of the building of the Ornithological Station was paid. 

  • 16. 10. 1943 - František Hejl was appointed as the first paid librarian and keeper of the archives. He stayed on this and other positions for 46 years. 

  • 20. 11. 1944 – The station was destroyed from a half by US air raid in Přerov 

  • 1946 – Charity collection in Přerov enabled an adaptation of the area 

  • 5.10.1947 - producers´ cooperative ORNIS was established for ensuring activities of the station (cancelled in 1955) 

  • 1948 – Political changes brought a stop in partial financing by state authorities and some representatives of the society were forced to leave their positions 

  • 6. 6. 1950 – issuing of the journal Československý ornitolog (“The Czechoslovakian Ornithologist”) was stopped. 

  • from 1951 – the existence of MOS (741 members) and its activities were ensured with self-sacrificing effort. 

  • 1954 – A permission for new issuing of the journal was gained, first issue in 1956; many projects for the public were realised in 1954 and later 

  • 1957 – 1958 – The society had avoided involving in the Czechoslovakian Union of Hunters, what brought persecutions for leading persons. 

  • 2. 12. 1958 – a proposal of involving the society as an association of volunteers in structures of the Moravian Museum in Brno; this was prevention of a potential forced incorporation in less suitable organisations. 

  • 4. 7.1959 – The Moravian Ornithological Society renamed – The Moravian Ornithological Association. 

  • 7. 12 1959 – The involvement was realised 

  • 1960 – Reform of administration of districts caused that the realised involvement had been impossible to continue (both the parts were not in the same district) 

  • from 1962 – serious arguments with the Comenius Museum Přerov, which tried to take over not only the Moravian Ornithological Association but also its possession.

  • 25. 5.1962 – It was decided that the Moravian Ornithological Association would not be a part of the Comenius Museum Přerov. A special independent organisation (Ornithological Station) was established. MOS realised its activities abroad under this name. 

  • 8. 12.1962 – meeting of members, the work continues, journal Zprávy MOS (“MOS Reports) 

  • 1966 and later – financial problems are reflected in activities 

  • 1.1.1970 – agreement, the Moravian Ornithological Station and the Moravian Ornithological Association will be handed over to a district museum. 

  • from1971 – a number of repairs was realised 

  • 28. 4.1973 – opening ceremony with meeting of the Moravian Ornithological Association, a new chairman (Dr. S. Svoboda), successful cooperations with many institutions. 

  • 1975 and later – monographs published every year in the edition Knihovna MOS ("MOS Library”) – together 13 monographs (from 70 to 250 pages each) 

  • 1979-1981 – A new building was erected 

  • 7. 2. 1981 - František Ginter was awarded with title “Honorary Chairmen of the Moravian Ornithological Association” for his merits for development of ornithology in Moravia vlater – A number of conferences and successful research projects were realised. 

  • In 1991, young ornithologists established the Moravian Ornithological Society. The meeting of the Moravian Ornithological Association elected new executive board (chairman ing. S. Bureš) on 21.3.1992. The board decided to send a letter to all members of the Moravian Ornithological Association proposing to unite the association and society in one organisation. Majority of members, who had sent their answers, agreed with renaming the association. The Moravian Ornithological Society became an independent organisation.

History of the MOS since 1991

1991
  • A few younger members of the Moravian Ornithological Association and the Czech Union of Conservationists started with preparation of renewal of the Moravian Ornithological Society at the beginning of the year 1991. The organising committee consisted of Pavel Džubera, Václav Plšek, Jaroslav Svoboda, Jiří Šafránek and Marek Tomčala
  • On 18. 3. 1991 the Moravian Ornithological Society was officially established by registration of the Charter by the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic
  • Activities of the MOS were controlled by a five-members presidium chaired by the president Jiří Šafránek
  • Issuing of leaflets “Nesting Boxes for Birds into Every Garden” (10,000 pieces) and their distribution were the first MOS projects. The projects were financially supported by the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic
  • At the end of the year 1991 the Moravian Ornithological Society issued the first volume of the journal “Moravský ornitolog” (The Moravian Ornithologist)
  • The Moravian Ornithological Society had 32 members (as at 31. 12. 1991)
1992
  • 8. 2. 1992 – annual meeting of members of the MOS was held in the Biological Station in Přerov. It was stated that contacts were successfully developed with organisations (Brontosaurus, Czech Union of Conservationists, Czech Society for Ornithology, Czech section of ICBP, local authorities and the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic).
  • 21. 3. 1992 – annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Association elected a new committee with Ing. Stanislav Bureš as its chairman. The committee decided to send all members of the Moravian Ornithological Association a letter proposing to unite both the ornithological organisations. Majority of those members, who answered, agreed with uniting and continuing with activities at the registered civic society the Moravian Ornithological Society (the Moravian Ornithological Association was not a legal entity).
1993
  • 20. 2. 1993 - annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Society was held in the Moravian Ornithological Station in Přerov. A change in the Charter (family membership) was the main item. The presidium stipulated its main tasks – creating a strong organisation of ornithologists and people aimed at protection of birds with many members. Medial presentation of MOS activities was another important task.
  • 31. 12. 1993 – the MOS had 450 members, what enabled it to gain an important position among conservation organisations in the Czech Republic.
1994
  • 26. 2. 1994 - annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Society was held in the Moravian Ornithological Station in Přerov. A campaign “Promotion of manufacture of nesting boxes for birds” realised during the previous year was appreciated. Regular issuing of articles about the manufacture of nesting boxes for birds and feeding birds in winter was involved in the promotion.
  • 17. 4. 1994 – the MOS, in cooperation with the Moravian Ornithological Station, organised a “day of opened doors” in the Station. Besides a performance of falconers also nesting boxes and food for birds were exhibited.
  • Public ornithological excursions, mainly lead by Jiří Polčák, have been organised at lakes in Tovačov and Záhlinice every year since 1994.
  • In 1994 a few leaflets aimed at conservation of nature and birds were issued: “Everybody can help” about first aid for injured and exhausted birds and lonely young birds, “White Stork” and “Protected landscape area Litovelské Pomoraví". Members of the MOS installed 483 new nesting boxes for birds and took care of 4,592 existing ones.
1995
  • 4. 2. 1995 - annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Society was held in the Moravian Ornithological Station in Přerov.
  • The MOS issued a few leaflets informing about international agreements dealing with protection of fauna species and their environment. Leaflets with instruction for manufacturing and instalment of nesting boxes for birds and feeding in winter as well as the leaflet “Help us – help birds” were issued again due to a great public interest. Successful projects “Mapping localities of winter stay of birds”, “Mapping nesting localities of Mute Swans”, “Census of Crested Larks” and “Survey about instalment of nesting boxes for birds”.
  • 31. 12. 1995 – the number of MOS members increased up to 703.
1996
  • 2. 3. 1996 - annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Society was held in the Moravian Ornithological Station in Přerov.
  • The journal Moravský ornitolog (The Moravian ornithologist) gained a new name Ptáci kolem nás (Birds around us).
  • The MOS helped the District Office with issuing of booklet “Protected parts of nature in Přerov district” and cooperated with issuing of booklet “Swaps of Middle Moravia”. A leaflet about protecting agriculture production by birds of prey and owls was issued with support by the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic.
  • The MOS realised the project "Improving relation of the public to the conservation of nature” with support by the Foundation for a Civil Society (USA).
  • The MOS had 821 members in 1996.
1997
  • 1. 3. 1997 - annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Society was held in the Moravian Ornithological Station in Přerov.
  • The MOS was awarded with the 3rd price (3000 USD) in the international competition by the Japanese Foundation Sasakawa for the realisation of the promotion "Gaining the public for protection of birds and nature”.
  • MOS members took part in saving collections in the Moravian Ornithological Station after floods.
  • The number of MOS members increased up to 1,078.
1998
  • 21. 2. 1998 - annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Society was held in the Knight Hall of the Corvinus Pallace of the Comenius Museum in Přerov. Dr. František Hýbl, director of the Comenius Museum, informed about damages caused by floods in the Moravian Ornithological Station in 1997.
  • doc. K. Hudec from Brno, B. Gavenda from Prusy, dr. Z. Rumler from Olomouc, O. Suchý from Dlouhá Loučka and dr. S. Svoboda from Hodonín gained honorary membership in the MOS.
  • The MOS took care of 12 injured birds and lonely young birds of 6 species and handed them over to the ZOO Olomouc or Rescue Station for Animals in Bartošovice.
  • A rook shooting was stopped due to MOS activities in the Kroměříž graveyard, a campaign against senseless Cormorants shooting was realised.
  • Nesting boxes for birds were installed in the Přerov park Michalov.
  • A leaflet promoting hedgerows and instalment of watering places for birds was issued.
  • The MOS started a campaign against losses of birds by collisions with glass tables and presented own stickers with silhouettes of birds of prey for instalment at large glass surface walls.
  • The MOS had 1,700 members in 1998.
1999
  • 27. 2. 1999 - annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Society was held in the Moravian Ornithological Station in Přerov. Ing. Čestmír Folk from Brno gained honorary membership in the MOS.
  • The MOS members took care of 9 injured birds and lonely young birds of 7 species and transported them to rescue stations and instigated manufacture and instalment of a new nesting plate for White Storks in Želatovice.
  • In the framework of administrative procedures the MOS put through new planting for cut trees and completing new 22 kV-electricity lines with barriers – protection of birds of prey.
  • A new project, supported by the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic, was started – “Approach to Ornithological Data for Local and State Authorities” (database of ornithological observations).
  • The MOS established a new office and shop with equipment for bird protection, literature and information centre for the public (including leaflets by MOS and other institution for conservation of nature) - Ekocentrum MOS, situated in Přerov, Čapka Drahlovského 3. The previous seats of the MOS were on Horní náměstí 29 (1991 – 1999), Komenského ulice and Kramářova ulice No. 5.
  • The MOS had 1,760 members in 1999.
2000
  • 26. 2. 2000 - annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Society was held in the Moravian Ornithological Station in Přerov. Oldřich Vítoslavský from Přerov, Vítězslav Přikryl from Skalička and František Cigánek from Přerov gained honorary membership in the MOS.
  • The MOS Ekocentrum was frequently contacted by the public asking for assistance with rescue of injured birds and lonely young birds. Altogether 23 birds of 13 species and 4 mammals of two species were handed over to rescue stations and ZOOs.
  • Distribution of stickers with silhouettes of birds of prey and participation in administrative procedures were continuing.
  • The project "Ornithological mutually informing system" (OVIS) was started. Ornithologists inform in its framework about observation of rare species of birds.
  • Members, who had not paid membership subscriptions, were deleted. Afterwards, the MOS had 1,640 members.
2001
  • 24.2.2001 - annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Society was held in the Moravian Ornithological Station in Přerov. František Černý from Pivín gained honorary membership in the MOS.
  • The project OVIS, i.e. Ornitologický Vzájemně Informační Servis (Ornithological Mutually Informative Service) was successfully developed. More and more people are involved and OVIS is very well received.
  • Zprávy MOS (MOS Reports) 2001 and 2002 were issued in cooperation with the Comenius Museum in Přerov. We also took part in publishing wall calendar with picture postcards “Protected Bird Species of the Zlín District - 2002”. Photographs were provided by our colleagues brothers Luděk and Dušan Boucný and Mr. Tunka.
  • The first land, a part of swamp meadow in the Moštěnka river basin between villages Beňov, Prusy and Želatovice was bought after a few years of effort.
  • Number of members was stable on a level of 1550 in 2001.
2002
  • 22.2.2002 - annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Society was held in the Moravian Ornithological Station in Přerov. Mrs. Irena Schwarzová gained honorary membership in the MOS.
  • The MOS annual meeting was unanimous in accepting the proposal of extending the number of MOS presidium members.
  • MOS members were informed about activities of the MOS presidium aimed at close cooperation and possible uniting with the Czech Society for Ornithology (ČSO).
2003
  • 22.2.2003 - annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Society was held in the Moravian Ornithological Station in Přerov.
  • 4.10.2003 – excursion to Tovačov lakes was organised as one of actions of the European Bird Festival in cooperation with the Czech Society for Ornithology (CSO). This cooperation regularly continues from this year.
  • 5.10.2003 – Opening day of the exhibitions Photographs of Birds of Middle-Moravia (Adolf Goebel) – in the framework of the European Bird Festival (the exhibition continued by 29.2.2004) in the Moravian Ornithological Station of the Comenius Museum in Přerov./font>
2004
  • 22.2.2004 – An agreement about cooperation between the MOS and CSO was signed at MOS annual meeting. It was also agreed that the cooperation should be evaluated at the end of 2004 and joining of both the societies would be judged.
  • New exhibitions: Birds on stamps (Adolf Goebel) - presented in the Moravian Ornithological Station of the Comenius Museum in Přerov within1.3. - 30.6. 2004, exhibition of children works “World of Birds” in Olomouc (within 19.4. - 14. 5. 2004) was completed with photographs (Adolf Goebel) and paints (Jiří Polčák) provided by the MOS. The exhibition also involved an informative MOS panel and MOS leaflets and other materials were distributed. The MOS also arranged another exhibition - Photographs of Insects of Middle-Moravia (Adolf Goebel) - in the Moravian Ornithological Station of the Comenius Museum in Přerov within 1.7.2004 – 31.1.2005.
  • RNDr. František Hanák, who was working in the MOS presidium and was also the editor-in-chief of the journal Ptáci kolem nás, suddenly died.
  • 25.9.2004 – meeting of MOS and CSO representatives in Mikulov. Both representations evaluated their cooperation and decided to join both the societies from 1.1.2005 presuming that MOS would be the Middle-Moravian Branch of the CSO from the date. It was stated that the decision should be confirmed by the MOS annual meeting – a new confirmed MOS Charter involving all necessary changes.
2005
  • 12.2.2005 - annual meeting of members of the Moravian Ornithological Society was held in the Moravian Ornithological Station in Přerov. All present members accepted a new MOS Charter. On its base the MOS decided to associate members of the CSO and complete its official name with – the Middle Moravian Branch of the Czech Society for Ornithology, modify its Charter so that it could be in agreement with that of the CSO and preserve its continuity as a legal entity. This step became an important milestone in the history of the Czech ornithological movement.
  • Jiří Šafránek, resigning president of the MOS, who was one of MOS founders and headed the MOS for 14 years, was awarded with the title Honorary President of the MOS. František Cigánek resigned for the position of the MOS secretary after a long period of devoted work. Mgr. Petr Rejzek was elected for the position of chairman of the new MOS presidium (11 members).
  • The main task of the new presidium is to adopt and develop activities of the MOS in new conditions after uniting ornithological movement in the Czech Republic.
  • 12.8.2005 – the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic registered the new MOS Charter.
